Why do cats sleep in odd positions — and why do they sleep so much? Is there a meaning to the way they sleep on their owners? Let’s dive into the mysteries of the way cats sleep.

How is Cat Sleep Different From Human Sleep?

One of the reasons cats always seem to be sleeping is that the way they sleep is vastly different from the way people sleep.

Cats don’t go into a deep sleep as often as humans. Instead, they take several light naps throughout the day. That’s because cats are hardwired as predators — they need to stay alert to defend themselves or catch prey.

Cat Sleeping Position Meanings

Here’s what you can learn from the way your cat decides to snooze throughout the day and night.

1. Belly-Up

When your cat sleeps with their belly up and exposed, they’re in a vulnerable position. Not only is this a comfortable way to sleep, but it shows they feel safe and at ease around you.

2. Bread Loaf

Cats will often sleep upright with their front paws tucked underneath their chest. This is a sign that they’re sleeping lightly and still alert.

3. Curled Up

This cat sleeping position keeps your beloved pet warm and protects the organs in their belly. It’s a common position if they’re feeling insecure and want to protect themselves, or if they want to get warmed up.

4. Lying On Their Side

When cats lie on their side, they’re sleeping in a partially exposed position — although this doesn’t leave them as exposed as the belly-up position. Because they’re vulnerable like this, it usually means your cat is just getting a light nap.

5. Legs Stretched Out

Sometimes your cat may sleep with their front legs stretched out in front of them and their back legs stretching out behind. This is a very relaxed and comfortable position that works well for deep sleep. It doesn’t leave your cat too exposed, either.

6. Paws In Their Face

If you see your cat sleeping with their paws in front of their face, don’t wake them up! Cats are able to fall into a rare deep sleep in this position and don’t want to be disturbed. The urge to cover their face is likely a natural instinct to protect themselves while they completely drift away.

7. Eyes Partially Open

While it may look odd from your perspective, sleeping with eyes partially open is a great way for your cat to stay alert as they get some rest. If they do this, they’re probably watching out for something in your home. This can happen when you have visitors around or if there’s something new in your home.

Why Does My Cat Sleep On Me?

Another common cat sleeping position is directly on their owners. Cats do this for several reasons, including:

  • Staying warm with your body heat
  • Feeling secure — this shows they trust you fully to protect them while they’re asleep
  • Marking you as part of their territory
  • Bonding with you

Having your cat sleep on you can either help you sleep better if cuddling and petting your cat helps you relax — or, it can hurt your sleep if your cat is too active. Don’t hesitate to put your sleep first and set that boundary with your pet if this closeness is hurting your quality of sleep!
