Getting quality sleep and the rest of your body are tied together as one. When you are getting the recommended hours of sleep, your body will thank you. You feel refreshed, you think effectively and make better decisions, and you’re in a better mood.

In the same way that getting good sleep can positively affect your health, so can the lack of sleep. One of the main things that lack of sleep or sleep deprivation leads to is heart problems.

Can Lack of Sleep Increase Risks for Heart Diseases?

Getting good rest is about more than just getting more energy. Your heart is responsible for pumping blood to all your major organs, supplying the necessary oxygen they need to properly function.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death amongst men and women around the world. During non-rem sleep, the heart is repairing from all of the work it does when you are awake. This is why your heart rate decreases as you are resting. Without this, your heart begins to pay the price, and eventually, the rest of your body will follow along.

Can Not Sleeping Lead to Stroke?

Studies show that people who sleep less than 6 hours a day are four times more likely to suffer from a stroke than people who sleep the recommended 7 to 8 hours.

This happens because of other health factors that lack of sleep can cause. When you aren’t getting enough sleep, high-stress levels are likely to occur. Increased blood pressure is another thing that lack and sleep lead to. Both of these health problems are the driving forces for stroke.

How to Avoid Heart Issues Due To Not Sleeping

Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to improve your sleeping habits and heart health:

  • Create a sleep schedule. Studies show that having a sleep schedule can improve the quality of your sleep. This can inadvertently help with getting you the recommended hours of rest.
  • Physical activity is a must. This not only improves the quality of your sleep but also helps with things like high blood pressure and stress.
  • See a doctor. Sometimes, sleep disorders like sleep apnea and insomnia are completely out of your control. You should see a professional to help get you back on track.

The Better Sleep app has different resources to help you create the perfect sleep routine. When you follow these things, you can easily attain a healthier heart and quality sleep. You can use things like meditation, soothing sounds, yoga, and more to help you sleep better at night.
